UHL Connects With Iowa Labs That Perform Rapid Influenza Testing
The University Hygienic Laboratory (UHL) is assisting clinical laboratories throughout Iowa that perform rapid influenza testing to prepare for their role in a pandemic influenza outbreak with a two-part influenza surveillance and biosafety program. UHL received a grant from the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) to fund the training. Laboratories in 24 hospitals and clinics across the state are expected to participate in the initial phase, currently under way. UHL scientists will provide the training onsite to assess influenza-testing capacities and biosafety practices and provide updates on national and state pandemic planning. The second phase, to begin later this spring, includes 12 hands-on sessions, two in each of the state's six bioterrorism planning regions.

How can I tell if they need to be cleaned and how do I select a company? --Sean N. Dear Sean: A variety of contaminants can accumulate in the ductwork of your HVAC (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning) system. Some cause no problems and others cause just dust. Still others, though, such as mold, bacteria and very fine particles, can cause health and allergy problems. The reasons most people have the HVAC system cleaned are readily apparent problems with allergies, excessive dust and odors in their homes. People also often have the system cleaned when they move into an existing home or a newly constructed home where fine drywall dust has settled everywhere.

It's been just over 18 months since Tim Hawkinson's phantasmagorical extravaganza of a midcareer survey came home to roost in the last truly important exhibition hosted at LACMA. Organized by the Whitney and subsequently named “Best Monographic Museum Show in New York City" by the U.S. chapter of the International Association of Art Critics, Hawkinson's self-titled retrospective was even more impressive in its hometown configuration, compiling more than 65 of his greatest hits from the previous two decades of encyclopedic exhibits at Ace Gallery — most of which already rivaled the best monographic museum shows around in both quality and quantity of work.From the tiny Bird skeleton made from fingernail clippings to the room-size tree-drum known as Pentecost, the work conflated the intimate and the spectacular, the formal and the conceptual, and the sublime and the ridiculous to a degree unsurpassed anywhere in contemporary art.
