Tradesmen from another time congregate at Seafood Festival
EL JOBEAN -- Just past the entrance to the Myakka River Seafood Festival, where two women collected $2 each from people streaming in, and just before the booths selling fried fish and ice cream, was a camp of sorts. Beneath canvas shades, a blacksmith pounded metal into hooks; a chandler dipped string into molten beeswax; a woodcarver explained the symbolism of a spoon he had been working on for years. The three were part of a village of craftsmen who showed and sold their wares as part of the festival, which began Saturday and was scheduled to continue Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Charlotte County Fairgrounds. The blacksmith flattened the end of a metal rod against an anvil and told a group of onlookers why he took up the craft. "I got into it because I wanted to make my own dinner bell," said Harland Fisher.
Officer Stassi meets with village board
Trying to clear his name, the whistle blower of the North Syracuse Police Department met with the village board Thursday night. Last year, police officer Michael Stassi went public about other officers allegedly falsifying time sheets. As a result, three people, including the former chief and captain, have been indicted on charges. .
With a snow blower, your duty of clearing the white stuff can be fun
The only thing for sure is higher taxes and that your snow blower breaks when you need it the most. Funny thing, I've never known one to fail in the summer. So I'm out there battling the snow, and the handle seems suddenly, I don't know, loose. Then, suddenly, I'm holding the handle, and the blower is freewheeling down the driveway. You might have noticed that handles are the sure-fail parts of yard tools. They encounter a lot of tensing over the years, develop stress cracks and rust and then there goes the blower, mower or whatever. I shouldn't complain. My blower is 27 years old. I've kept it going with loving tune-ups and greasings and the odd belt replacement here and there. Still, it was a shock to lose it. GREAT NEIGHBOR Lucky for me, my neighbor, Eric, got a blower for Christmas last year.
Steering shaft knuckle can cause vibration
DEAR DOCTOR: My 2002 Chevy Avalanche has 107,000 miles. When driving at highway speeds or over rough roads, there is a severe vibration in the front end. It lasts a few seconds and can be felt in the floorboards. Passengers also feel the vibration. I took the truck to the dealer, and they suggested a wheel alignment. Now the problem is worse. The steering feels looser than before the unnecessary alignment. Could the problem be a shock or ball joint? Jason .
